The Save Enugu Group (SEG), a civic accountability organization, has declared an all-out campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections in Enugu State, announcing a sweeping investigation into political officeholders and aspirants focusing on performance, transparency, corruption, and political funding.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Assistant Secretary General, Ogbuefi Onyia Chuks, the group warned that no politician, regardless of their status or influence, would be spared from scrutiny as political activities intensify across the state.
In the statement, titled “Enugu is not for sale: SEG begins full accountability probe ahead of 2027,” accused some political actors of attempting to dominate the political space through questionable financial influence and propaganda. The group insisted that the people of Enugu State deserve full disclosure about those seeking public office.
“We, the Save Enugu Group (SEG), issue this statement with urgency and clarity: Enugu’s future will be defended-firmly, lawfully, and without compromise,” the group stated.
SEG said that its ongoing review was designed to interrogate the records and conduct of both current officeholders and emerging aspirants. The group stressed that the initiative was intended to protect the integrity of governance and the democratic process in the state.
“As political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027, we are placing all political officeholders and aspirants on notice. SEG has commenced a comprehensive, independent review focused on three non-negotiable areas: performance, transparency, and corruption,” the statement read.
According to the civic group, investigators are currently reviewing public records, monitoring the deployment of government resources, and examining the impact of governance on ordinary residents.
In a strongly worded statement, SEG disclosed that any evidence of corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment, contract fraud, or financial misconduct uncovered during the exercise would not only be made public but also forwarded to anti-corruption agencies for action.
“Our findings will be made public, and beyond public disclosure, every credible case... will be formally forwarded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and other relevant anti-graft and security agencies for immediate investigation and necessary action,” the group stated.
The group further broadened its investigation to include fresh political entrants and aspirants seeking elective office for the first time, warning that the origins of campaign financing and political sponsorship would come under intense scrutiny.
“Every new entrant into Enugu politics will be thoroughly examined. We will probe the sources of campaign funding, financial histories, business interests, and the networks backing political ambitions,” the statement read.
SEG maintained that the people of Enugu State have the right to know the true character of individuals seeking leadership positions before the next election cycle. The group challenged political parties operating in the state to uphold internal democracy and ensure transparent processes.
“We call on political parties to run credible, transparent, and competitive processes. We challenge aspirants to face the people with clear ideas, clean records, and verifiable integrity-not with intimidation, patronage, or suspicious war chests,” the statement said.
Addressing residents directly, the organisation urged citizens not to surrender their democratic power.
“To the people of Enugu State: this is your moment. Demand answers. Ask hard questions. Refuse to be deceived. Refuse to be sidelined,” the group declared.
The statement ended with a final declaration: “Enugu belongs to its people, not to political cartels, corrupt networks, or desperate power brokers.”
