The Anambra State Police Command has intercepted a 21-year-old woman who allegedly planned to sell her newborn baby, in a rescue operation that unfolded on Friday.

According to a statement signed by the commands public relations officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga on Sunday, Police operatives attached to Oyi Divisional Headquarters stormed a location in Igbariam on friday June 19, 2026, acting on information from a concerned citizen and found the young mother with her infant daughter—both now in safe custody.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had concealed both her pregnancy and delivery from her parents. It was further gathered that she had left her family home in Imo State and sought refuge with a friend residing in Igbariam before the alleged plan was uncovered. " the statement read

Police said the operative immediately contacted the young woman's parents, who rushed to Anambra State. Following their arrival, both mother and baby were officially handed over to the family to ensure proper care, supervision, and emotional support, while investigation continues.

Reacting to the incident, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the whistleblower whose timely information led to the rescue.

He reaffirmed the commands commitment to protecting children from all forms of abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and neglect.

He further urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.

The Police assured that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
