The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the alleged brutal rape and murder of a female Point of Sale (POS) operator, whose body was discovered in a canal in Sangotedo-Ajah area of the state.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi on Thursday, the grim discovery was made following a distress call that prompted an immediate response from law enforcement. "The command received information on July 14, 2026, at about 11:45 a.m. that the suspect had allegedly killed the woman and was attempting to dispose of her body in a canal along Monastery Road, Mopo, Ajah.

"The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) immediately led a team of operatives to the scene, where the suspect, who had already been apprehended by security guards in the area, was taken into Police custody."

The victim, a young woman who operated a POS business, was reportedly subjected to a heinous sexual assault before being killed. Her body was recovered from the canal near the Shoprite complex in Sangotedo and has since been transported to the General Hospital Mortuary in Yaba.

"The body of the deceased was evacuated to the General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for preservation and autopsy. The suspect remains in Police custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation."

In a firm response to the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, ordered a thorough and diligent investigation into the matter. He assured the public that no effort would be spared to ensure that justice is served.
