The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, identified as Agwu Ukpo, from Akanu-Ohaofia, following a viral video showing him brutally assaulting a woman in what authorities have described as a "barbaric and inhumane" act of domestic violence.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the commands public relations officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka on Sunday.

The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage on social media, reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a pot of soup. The victim, identified as Amarachi Chiyere, was seen in the disturbing footage being physically attacked by the suspect.

According to the statement, "Leveraging on actionable intelligence, the Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Abia Command have apprehended the above mentioned suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chinyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup.

"The case is currently under discreet investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations." The statement reads

In a strongly worded statement, the command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence.

"The Abia state police command once again strongly condemns this barbaric and inhuman act of domestic violence and reiterates the fact that such behaviour is unacceptable under any circumstances." The statement reads

The police further urged members of the public to desist from all forms of violence.

"Members of the public are hereby urged to desist from all forms of violence, as the command remains fully committed to ensuring justice is served in the state and that perpetrators of crime will be made to face the wrath of the law." The statement reads

The command disclosed that the suspect is currently facing charges of assault and attempted murder.
