The governor of Abia State Dr. Alex Otti, has officially unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft for United Nigeria Airlines, named in honor of literary icon Professor Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Achebe.

The unveiling ceremony, held at the Nesto Aviation Services (NESTAV) facility at Ikeja, Lagos, marked a significant milestone for the indigenous airline and the nation's aviation sector.

In his address, Governor Otti commended the airline's Chairman and Founder, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, for the gesture of honoring distinguished Nigerians. "For remembering to honor our people, you will be honored," Otti declared.

The Governor also praised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, for fostering private-sector participation in the industry. He particularly lauded the government's plan to establish an aircraft leasing company, describing it as a strategic move to strengthen local airlines.

"What you've done is to hedge the local airlines so they come behind the strong tower of government and you can negotiate once your hands are strong," Otti stated.

The Governor further revealed that the Abia Airport project is making significant progress, with the runway at an advanced stage, reaffirming the state's readiness to serve as a hub for United Nigeria Airlines.

In a major announcement, Minister Festus Keyamo revealed that the Federal Government has approved US, Canada, and other international routes for United Nigeria Airlines. This means passengers can now fly on the newly named aircraft to destinations across the globe.

Keyamo also commended Governor Otti's commitment to aviation infrastructure, noting that the Governor had insisted on upgrading the proposed airstrip in Abia to a full-fledged international airport, with the state providing counterpart funding.

Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, founder and CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, said the acquisition reflects growing confidence in the Nigerian aviation industry, driven by reforms introduced by the Minister.

His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Achebe, expressed deep appreciation for the honor, describing it as humbling and meaningful. He reflected on his relationship with the late Chinua Achebe and offered prayers for the airline's continued success.

Dr. Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, expressed confidence that United Nigeria Airlines is on course to becoming one of the largest airlines in West Africa. He praised Governor Otti's leadership, describing him as "the pride of the South-East, the pride of Nigeria, and the pride of democracy."

The event was graced by the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Ona Najomo, Dr. Uju Ifejika, royal fathers, captains of industry, and other distinguished dignitaries. The ceremony featured the presentation of recognition plaques and the official unveiling of the two Boeing aircraft.

The newly acquired aircraft are expected to enhance United Nigeria Airlines' operational capacity and expand its reach across domestic and international routes.
