ASABA — The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, known as "Odogwu of Asaba," following allegations that he raped a 20-year-old woman who later died after ingesting a poisonous substance.
The arrest was announced Wednesday in a statement by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who confirmed that Ogbonna was taken into custody after a petition was filed with the police.
According to police reports, the deceased had traveled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna allegedly invited her for a content creation training program that he had been promoting on his social media platforms.
Upon her arrival, the suspect allegedly took the young woman to a hotel where he raped and physically assaulted her, police said.
The victim reportedly returned home in a state of emotional trauma and disclosed the alleged assault to her parents. Before her death, she recorded a video in which she recounted her ordeal and described the emotional distress she experienced following the incident, according to authorities.
Police stated that she later ingested a toxic substance in what has been described as a suicide and died despite efforts to save her life.
Following the petition, Delta State Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi directed the Area Command in Effurun to launch an immediate investigation, which led to Ogbonna's arrest.
A video circulating on social media shows the 44-year-old content creator pleading with the victim's parents for a settlement. "This is a very terrible mistake. I'm ready to give everything," he was heard saying.
"During preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly made useful statements to the Police, while further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case," Edafe stated.
The Commissioner of Police assured the deceased's family and the public that the command would conduct a thorough and professional investigation. He pledged that no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked and that appropriate legal action would be taken if warranted by the outcome of the investigation.
The police have urged members of the public to allow investigators to conclude their work and refrain from actions that could undermine the ongoing probe.
The case remains under investigation.
