Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have successfully foiled a brazen kidnap attempt targeting a prominent businessman, neutralizing four suspected gang members and recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, on Tuesday at the state command.
CP Tijani disclosed that the incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the Jakande Estate Gate in the Ejigbo area of Lagos.
"The operation was based on credible intelligence that a notorious kidnapping gang was planning to abduct a wealthy businessman. The group, which specializes in targeting high-net-worth individuals, was said to travel into Lagos specifically to execute their heinous crimes." He said
Further intelligence revealed a chilling connection to past crimes. The gang leader, identified as Ifeanyi (male), also known as Ifeko, is reportedly based abroad but had arrived in Lagos to lead the operation.
Crucially, Ifeko is alleged to be the mentor who trained Henry Asoona (male), the mastermind behind the "billionaire kidnappers" gang that was neutralized by police at the Ladipo International Spare Parts Market in 2024.
"Acting on the intelligence, police operatives moved to the scene. Upon sighting the officers, the suspects opened fire, sparking a fierce gun duel. The operatives responded with superior firepower, resulting in the neutralization of four gang members. One additional suspect managed to escape despite sustaining bullet wounds." He said
Exhibits Recovered from the Scene: One Toyota Sienna vehicle, one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and 25 rounds of live ammunition, one Submachine Gun (SMG) rifle with one magazine loaded with 12 rounds of live ammunition, one Toyota Corolla key and one Lexus vehicle key.
The Command confirmed that an Inspector of Police sustained a gunshot injury to his left leg during the exchange. He was immediately rushed to a hospital where he is said to be responding positively to treatment.
"A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect and any other accomplices connected to the gang. Investigation into the matter is ongoing." He said
